Every Radiologist Deserves Time for Things That Matter

Written by Scott Gerst, MD | September 4, 2025

Time. Sometimes you just need a little extra, but some life events require all of your time. In radiology, the reality is that personal time is hard to come by in any measure.

A few years ago, my dad began to show signs he was approaching the end of his struggle with Alzheimer's. I needed to spend time with him while he still knew who I was. There would never be a second chance for this small window of time.

At my academic radiology practice that simply wouldn’t have been possible. It’s hard to say, “Look, I just want to take more time to go home to see my parents.”

There was always this mountain of work we could never get on top of. I couldn’t leave my desk to grab a bite to eat, let alone take the substantial personal time I desperately wanted with my father.

Coming to vRad allowed me the ability to do that. I couldn’t trade that for anything.

What Time Means to Me:

  • Time for family: I was able to spend priceless weeks with my dad. Time I could never have gotten back if I’d missed it.
  • Time for the little things: Playing with my dogs, taking walks with my husband. Those might seem small, but I only realized how much I was missing them when I got them back.
  • Time to be a radiologist: I didn’t anticipate how much freedom vRad would give me to just be a radiologist. To spend as much time as I decide on every case.

For many radiologists, saying you want more personal time can be a tough conversation. If you’re feeling frustrated in your current position because of time, reach out. Find out how different it can be.

For me, it’s made all the difference.
