Breast Cancer Awareness: What You Need to Know Now, Part 3

In this blog series Part 3, I will be sharing how newer screening tools now exist including breast MRI.

Newer screening tools now exist including breast MRI
If you have a strong family history of breast cancer or other risk factors that increase your lifetime risk to 25% of developing the disease, then you may be a candidate for annual breast MRI along with annual mammography.

Other risk factors include women who inherit a genetic mutation of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes, women who started menstruation early (before 12 years of age), late menopause (after 50 years of age), nulliparity (having never had children) and late parity (first child after the age of 30).

Speak to your doctor if you think you may be at higher risk. It is possible that you will gain valuable information speaking to a genetics counselor.
