Fitting in Fitness During the Work Day!

Everyone understands all the health benefits that come along with regular exercise, so why is it that we have such a hard time fitting it into our schedule?  With long work weeks, evening meetings and programs, families, cooking, cleaning, etc., it is no surprise that our time is limited and exercising gets pushed to the back burner. Below are some ideas on how to fit in exercise at work.  By incorporating some of these ideas into your work day, you have the opportunity to burn extra calories every day!

Use your lunch break to go walking
At vRad we have access to a great walking trail around Purgatory Creek.  If it gets too cold to walk outside, you can utilize indoor spaces like the mall.

Take the stairs

If you work in a building that has multiple floors like vRad, take the stairs instead of the elevator when getting to work or when you need to visit another floor.  You could even take a couple minutes to go up and down a few times to get your heart rate going.

Walk and talk
Instead of always sending emails or IMs to your co-workers, get up and go see them!  You could also try scheduling a walking meeting with a co-worker if you have something to discuss with them.  A walking meeting can be both productive and healthy!

Try aerobics and strength training at your desk

  • Store light dumbbells in your office desk drawer and do a few sets of biceps, triceps or shoulder exercises
  • If you can find a vacant office or conference room take a few moments to do a few walking-lunges
  • Do 1 minute of jumping jacks or simulate jumping rope
  • Try doing a few chair squats or leg lifts while you are sitting in your chair.  Lift one leg, extend it out straight, hold for 2 seconds; then lower your foot, but stop short of the floor and repeat.
